Powering the Future: How SolarH2 Is Advancing Renewable Hydrogen in California

By CitiGreen Inc. | July 2026

As California’s energy needs continue to evolve, electricity is only part of the solution. Industries that require high-energy fuels, including heavy transportation, manufacturing, and logistics, are increasingly exploring renewable hydrogen as a way to reduce emissions while maintaining reliable operations.

To help meet that growing demand, CitiGreen established SolarH2, an independent company focused on developing renewable hydrogen production facilities powered by dedicated solar energy.

Our first project represents an important step toward building clean energy infrastructure that complements commercial solar and supports California’s long-term energy future.

What Is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is produced by using electricity from renewable sources, such as solar power, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis.

Unlike conventional hydrogen production, this process produces no direct carbon emissions during hydrogen generation when powered entirely by renewable electricity.

Hydrogen can then be stored, transported, and used as a fuel or industrial feedstock in applications where direct electrification may not be practical.

Why Hydrogen Matters

Renewable hydrogen has the potential to support industries that require high energy density or continuous operation.

Potential applications include:

Heavy-duty transportation
Municipal and commercial vehicle fleets
Industrial manufacturing
Backup and distributed power systems
Energy storage
Ports and logistics operations

As renewable energy continues to expand, hydrogen offers another pathway for reducing emissions while improving energy resilience.

The SolarH2 Approach

SolarH2 combines dedicated solar generation with onsite hydrogen production.

Instead of exporting electricity to the utility grid, renewable electricity is used directly to power an electrolyzer that produces hydrogen.

This behind-the-meter approach reduces dependence on utility interconnection constraints while creating a renewable fuel that can be delivered to commercial customers.

Our First Project

SolarH2 is developing a renewable hydrogen production facility in Northern California that will integrate:

Dedicated solar generation
PEM electrolysis
Hydrogen compression and storage
Commercial fueling and distribution infrastructure

The project is intended to supply renewable hydrogen for transportation, industrial, and other commercial applications.

Why This Matters for California

California has established ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving energy reliability.

Renewable hydrogen is expected to play an important role alongside technologies such as commercial solar, battery storage, and electric vehicles.

By producing hydrogen from renewable electricity, projects like SolarH2 can help diversify California’s clean energy infrastructure while supporting domestic fuel production.

Experience Matters

Developing a renewable hydrogen project requires expertise across multiple disciplines, including:

Site evaluation
Utility coordination
Engineering
Environmental permitting
Project financing
Construction management
Long-term operations

CitiGreen brings more than 24 years of experience developing commercial renewable energy projects throughout Northern California. That experience provides the foundation for SolarH2 as it expands into renewable hydrogen infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

Renewable hydrogen is still an emerging industry, but momentum continues to build as businesses, government agencies, and energy providers look for additional ways to reduce emissions and strengthen energy resilience.

SolarH2 represents CitiGreen’s continued commitment to developing practical, forward-looking energy solutions that address tomorrow’s challenges while building on decades of commercial renewable energy experience.

If your organization is interested in renewable hydrogen, project development, or potential site opportunities, we’d welcome the opportunity to start a conversation.
